Can Cleaning Claude Text Change RTL Punctuation?

Yes, it can change how punctuation is displayed in mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text. This browser cleaner deletes U+200F RIGHT-TO-LEFT MARK (RLM) without a replacement. The visible letters and parentheses remain, but the removed mark may have been guiding their display order. Keep the original and review the result in its destination before copying it.

Try the browser cleaner

The labels expose the otherwise invisible mark. The diagram shows code-point order, not a guarantee of identical visual layout in every app.

Try the exact input

Copy this entire code span, including the invisible character between the space and opening parenthesis, into the text cleaner: Hello ‏(سلام). Do not retype only what looks visible. The live browser returned Hello (سلام), original length 13, clean length 12, one removed character, one changed category, and “Bidi controls” 1. In source notation the input is "Hello \u200F(سلام)".

Why punctuation can move

Unicode's bidirectional algorithm treats RLM as a zero-width directional mark. Such marks can influence nearby neutral characters, including punctuation, in mixed-direction text. The exact visual result also depends on the surrounding text and the destination's paragraph direction. This tool changes the stored code-point sequence; its report does not preview every destination's rendering.

The browser script places U+200F in “Bidi controls,” then copies every unmatched character unchanged. It does not rewrite Arabic words, swap parentheses, add a replacement mark, or set the destination app's direction. The report guide explains why one deletion yields one removed character and one changed category.

When to keep the original

  1. Save the uncleaned text, especially if it mixes Arabic, Hebrew, English, numbers, or punctuation.
  2. Compare the cleaned result in the actual document, editor, or publishing field where it will be used.
  3. If punctuation or number order changes, preserve the original direction mark or use that destination's direction controls with an informed editor's review.

Public English-language discussions ask how to place punctuation beside Arabic text and how to position numbers with Arabic in an editor. They illustrate legitimate uses for direction marks; they do not show that Claude inserted one. This site only cleans pasted text in the browser and does not assess authorship or AI-detector outcomes.
